Auto Immune Hepatitis

Auto immune hepatitis is a disorder in which the immune system attacks the liver, causing damage and inflammation. If left untreated, auto immune hepatitis can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure. To diagnose auto immune hepatitis, your doctor may order a blood test, stool test, or a liver biopsy. Treatment typically involves medication to suppress the attacking immune system or for severe cases, a liver transplant.

Causes of auto immune hepatitis include:

  • Autoimmunity
  • Environmental triggers
  • Genetic predisposition
